Model Payment & Rates

MODEL PAY RATES SIMPLIFIED

In an unregulated industry and at a time where more models are joining than ever before, it seems that the market is flooded, so you need to take note if you want to survive.

While amateurs working for free (TF) seems popular for portfolio shoots, getting your friends to LIKE your 'amazing' pics, and gaining experience, it can also be a risky option for several reasons.

Some models get type cast this way and find it hard to break free. Most generally also work with amateurs at this stage, so images produced can look arty but amateur, or they became part of an amateur network with very little work and money. Professionals breed professionals!

See our  - What are you Worth? page to determine your value better.

The Australian models industry has reached a point like never before, where commercial groups are exploiting the use and availability of 'cheap' models, by paying whatever they feel, or offering exposure... which means no pay. This continued practice means the industry will collapse due to a lack of fair paid work available for models.

Its clearly such a big topic we plan to discuss further and in depth, but you do need to know this:

IF A COMMERCIAL BUSINESS HIRES A CASUAL OR PERMANENT MODEL EMPLOYEE FOR PROMOTION OR TO MAKE MONEY, THEY MUST PAY THE MINIMUM WAGE OR MAY BE IN BREACH OF LEGISLATION AND LIABLE TO PROSECUTION.

Aussie Elite is supporting the industry and we want to know when you see jobs advertised by businesses for less than the award rates listed. We are in contact with the government departments which regulates and pursues this Models Award.  Feel free to support us and post the topic on social media, and commercial brands need to be warned, so use the hashtag:  #fairpayformodels

THERE ARE LOOPHOLES FOR MODELS TO BE AWARE OF.

VOLUNTEERS (TFP) - If you do the job as a volunteer (no pay), you are not entitled to anything for being so charitable.

FREELANCER WITH ABN - If you go in as freelancer with an ABN number, you are then operating as an Independent Contractor in business and accepting of whatever negotiated price you agreed upon or was advertised... so cannot really complain later. Fair work laws still apply but it is harder to dispute, so you need to be smart and set fair rates when you take on the job, and remember you need your own Public Liability Insurance, plus pay GST and taxes.

FREELANCE MODEL (no ABN) - Those models with NO business ABN number are legally being employed as a CASUAL model. This means that they are entitled to minimum wages as mentioned below, regardless of an employer offering any old pay rate. You can complain, employers are liable to court action, and you have more rights than a model with an ABN.

MINIMUM Standard casual model rates  (aged 18yo+ models)
